What the iPad Means for salesforce.com

Steve Jobs has done it again. He’s delivered a product that makes life easier and work more fun.

Users of the new iPad will be able to run business applications like our Sales Cloud, watch a movie, or read a book all from the same device. And we’ll all have the same fantastic experience regardless of whether we work for a big company or a little mom and pop, live in Wasilla, AK or Washington, DC, log in at the office or on a ski slope.

This is the beauty of cloud computing, and it’s also democracy in action. We founded our company ten years ago with what seemed then like a radical vision -- letting customers of any size access their applications and data wherever they happened to be. We wanted to break the software chains that bind employees to their desks and prevent companies from innovating.

But as our founder and chief executive Marc Benioff pointed out earlier today, some of the devices people use to access the cloud have left something to be desired. Many are functional, but they are not necessarily a joy to use.

First with the iPhone and today with the iPad, Apple is bringing its design magic to increase accessibility to the cloud. For several years people have been talking about how cloud computing is “hot.” Now, with Steve’s blessing, it’s also “cool.” This is great news for everyone who makes cloud applications. I can’t wait to use salesforce.com on the iPad.

Spring '10 Mobile Release Preview
In the coming weeks, our customers will have access to the new Spring ‘10 release of the mobile clients, which will be published in conjunction with the release of the web app. The information below highlights some critical information for BlackBerry users as well as general information about the release for all mobile clients.

BlackBerry Users MUST UPGRADE to OS v4.3

The Spring ‘10 release includes new features which require a minimum OS version of 4.3.
Devices running the current version of Salesforce will continue to function. The Winter ‘10 release of Salesforce for BlackBerry (v11.6.x) will still be available at http://mobile.salesforce.com, through 2010, for devices running older versions of the device operating system.
To take advantage of new features in the Spring ‘10 release and in the future, Salesforce recommends upgrading to the most recent OS offered by your carrier, which is v4.5 or higher for Salesforce supported devices. To get the latest official operating system:

What new features will be made available in Spring ‘10?
Mobile for all editions is here! With the Spring ‘10 release, every Salesforce customer can enjoy free basic access to Salesforce from a mobile device regardless of license type.

And that's not all, now you can create, edit and delete records from any object that is supported by Mobile Lite. Need to update the phone number of your best customer while on the go? Mobile Lite lets you do it. Want to create a new Opportunity record? You can do that, too. In fact, Mobile Lite users now have full access to all of the supported object types, including Accounts, Contacts, Opportunities, Leads, Cases, Solutions, Assets, Tasks, Events, and everyone's favorite, Dashboards. Do more than ever while on the go!

BlackBerry v11.7

Link to Records: Do you regularly receive emails with links to data in Salesforce? Now when you tap on those links from your BlackBerry email, the mobile application will automatically launch and take you to the record if it is already on the device, or find it on the server and fetch it.
Support for WiFi: Take advantage of high-speed mobile connectivity! With the new WiFi support, you are no longer confined to a cellular data connection. With the latest release, you can download, activate, and use the Salesforce mobile application with nothing more than a WiFi connection.
Activation UI improvements: Have you been confused or frustrated by the mysterious activation process when you first log into the BlackBerry client? With this enhancement, you are presented with more information about what’s happening during the activation process, and the client is smarter about getting through the activation process as fast as possible so you get up and running faster than ever.
Support for 5.0 OS: RIM has successfully resolved a bug that has afflicted database heavy applications like Salesforce. This fix is confirmed to be in OS v5.0.0.428 and higher. The Spring ‘10 release includes a work-around that will allow Salesforce to work for most organizations on older versions of the v5.0 operating system. To upgrade your v5.0 OS, follow the instructions listed above. Note: RIM uses multiple numbers to describe each OS. v5.0.0.428 is in “Bundle” 689.

Windows Mobile v10.0.4

No new features will be released.
Some bug fixes are included: fixing the phone number mask for international numbers and blank case comments related lists.

iPhone v4.2

Filter and Search: Finding the specific piece of data you need is now a breeze. No more hunting and hoping to find that opportunity or lead you entered 3 months ago. Every tab and every list view includes a new Filter and Search bar. Just start typing and the list of records is reduced to those that match. Select “Search” to look across the device for the record. One more tap extends the search to the remote server to retrieve matching records not on the device.
Find Related Records: Find all of your related records with one tap. Like the new filter and search functionality, there is a new one-button means of getting all related records. This feature is ideally suited for Mobile Lite users who may not have all related contacts or opportunities on the device. Tapping on “Search server for more…” initiates a remote search and grabs the additional records.
Encrypted Data Store: End-to-end data security has been enhanced. To protect data from attacks, this release incorporates an encrypted data store (AES 128bit encryption) that goes beyond the standard on-device security offered by iPhones and iPods. This encrypted data store does not get synced to iTunes. This ensures nothing can be compromised from your computer. When combined with the encrypted data transport (AES 256bit encryption) and the ability to remotely wipe data from a stolen device, your sensitive data remains secure.

Don’t be intimidated by the name. Unless you really like typing on your mobile phone, this week’s App of the Week is worth checking out – and it’s free. SPARQ Coder by Scout will create a barcode for your salesforce.com contacts. When you scan this barcode—using a barcode reader app on your cell phone—the contact’s name, phone number and email address will be added to your mobile phone contact list.

To access the barcode, simply go to the Contact Detail page in salesforce.com

SPARQ Coder automatically creates a bar code for your contact:

Salesforce CRM Mobile v11.6.1 for BlackBerry is available for download
What bug fixes are included in BlackBerry v11.6.1?
This version (v11.6.1) includes several big fixes:

New Branding - We love the new cloud icon.

Dashboards and other VF pages were not accessible: In the previous version, some users using the BIS to connect to the internet were not able to access Dashboards, the Help tab, or Visualforce pages. This bug is fixed.
Reports tab was missing search bar:This functionality disappeared in v11.6. This bugs is fixed.
Products list views were slow to load: A change in v11.6 caused a performance problem when viewing lists of products. This bug is fixed.
Case Comments were listed alphabetically: These historical comments should be listed by date/time by default. This bug is fixed.
Wrong connection type displayed: The System Info screen was showing the device was connected to MDS or BES when BIS was selected. This bug is fixed.
Custom TextArea fields were limited: The client was not allowing users to enter text to the full length of custom TextArea fields. This bug is fixed.
Log-a-Call Logic changed: In v11.6, calls initiated from Salesforce Mobile where logged as having a duration of one hour (albeit this duration could be edited by the user in the log). This fix captures an accurate duration, bringing it in line with other related improvements in 11.6.

Salesforce CRM Mobile v10.0.3 for Windows Mobile is available for download
What bug fixes are included in Windows Mobile v10.0.3?
New Branding - We love the new cloud icon. (included in v10.0.2)

Edit layout showed non-updateable fields - In prior versions of the application, the edit view for a record would show fields marked as "creatable" even when the field may not be "editable". This fix ensures only fields that are marked as "editable" are shown when editing a record. (included in v10.0.2)
Change Owner not working - In prior versions of the application, the Change Owner functionality was not working. This has been fixed.

Salesforce CRM Mobile v4.1.1 for iPhone available now
What bug fixes are included in iPhone v4.1.1?
This version (v4.1.1) includes several bug fixes. Like v4.1, this update requires OS version 3.0 or higher.

Event calendar crashes: In the previous version when running on OS v3.1, the application would sometimes crash when selecting a different day in the calendar. This bug is fixed.
Percent fields would not save: On an Opportunity, if the Probability field is changed along with the Status field, the record would not save. On all objects, certain numbers could not be entered (e.g., 8.2 on a Currency(3,2) field. These bugs is fixed.
Custom mobile view not working: No results where shown on custom list views which filtered on fields with a NULL (empty) value. This bug is fixed.

Now. The update has been approved by Apple and is in the App Store.

BlackBerry Summer '09 Release: client version 11.5 is available for download!
Summer '09 Release brings a new version of the Blackberry client: v11.5
What are the new features released with v11.5?
Related Lists: improved user experience puts related lists directly on the detail screen.

Clone: create an exact copy of a record, and save your thumbs.
Faster Search: the performance while searching for remote records has been boosted dramatically.
Visualforce Mobile: enhanced support lets you add custom links fromany record to web pages or custom Visualforce pages; includes a newJavaScript library for accessing GPS and other advanced functionality.

What else?
Salesforce Mobile for BlackBerry supports now new languages! Three new languages have been added to the already supported English and Japanese. The full list of supported languages is:

Upgrade NOW to Salesforce Mobile for iPhone v4.0.2!

What's new in iPhone v4.0.2?
Apple will release iPhone operating system v3.0 on June 17, 2009, and this new OS is radically different from the previous version (v2.x). Salesforce CRM Mobile users MUST UPGRADE to v4.0.2, in order to use the app with the new operating system. For the best user experience, upgrade Salesforce Mobile now.
This upgrade is recommended for all users. It works on all recent versions of the iPhone OS.

The new client is now available on App Store. Tap the App Store icon on your iPhone and search for Salesforce Mobile.

New and easier link to download the Salesforce CRM Mobile client!
What is the new URL?
The URL to download the client is now shorter and easier to type! This is the new URL: http://mobile.salesforce.com
The clients that can be downloaded from here are:
the BlackBerry client, and
the Windows Mobile client.

The iPhone client can be downloaded from App Store.

What is the old URL? Is it still active?
The old URL is http://mobile.salesforce.com/setup and it is still valid. Both the new and old one work.
