Force.com Bloggers, Developers, and Technical Writers are using 3rd party highlighting tools to publish code examples. These tools do not recognize Apex/Visualforce language-specific syntax, therefore the final published codes examples are typically published using Java or ASP.NET syntax highlighting rules. A new on-demand resource at http://highlighter.force.com is proposed where code can be pasted and converted into raw HTML and CSS for use in publishing and sharing on the web. The highlighter should also have an option for automatically publishing links to online Developer Guide resources for all native Apex classes and Visualforce components. The ability to paste highlighted code into the Force.com browser IDE or Eclipse is also highly desirable.
